In Ukrainian, almost every verb belongs to an aspect pair (аспектна пара). Mastering verb aspect (вид дієслова) is essential because it allows you to express not just what happened, but how the action unfolded—whether you are focusing on an ongoing process or a finished result.
PROCESS VS. RESULT: THE CORE CONCEPT
Ukrainian verbs are split into two fundamental aspects:
Imperfective Aspect (Недоконаний вид): Focuses on the process, duration, repetition, or general habit of an action.
Perfective Aspect (Доконаний вид): Focuses on the completed result, boundary, or single occurrence of an action.
OVERVIEW AND TENSE BEHAVIOR:
Primary Focus:
Imperfective: Process, duration, habit, uncompleted action.
Perfective: Completed result, single instance, outcome.
Present Tense:
Imperfective: Available (for example: я читаю — I am reading).
Perfective: Does not exist (Cannot express present tense).
Past Tense:
Imperfective: Action was in progress (я читав — I was reading).
Perfective: Action was completed (я прочитав — I read / finished reading).
Future Tense:
Imperfective: Compound form (я буду читати — I will be reading).
Perfective: Simple form (я прочитаю — I will read / finish reading).
Typical Key Words:
Imperfective: довго (for a long time), часто (often), завжди (always).
Perfective: нарешті (finally), раптом (suddenly), вже (already).
COMPARE IN CONTEXT:
Process: Я люблю дивитися кіно. — I like watching movies in general.
Що ви зазвичай замовляєте? (Process / Habit) — What do you usually order?
Я завжди довго вирішую. (Habitual Process) — It always takes me a long time to decide.
Result: Хочеш подивитися кіно сьогодні? — Do you want to watch a specific movie with me today?
Сьогодні ми хочемо замовити середню піцу. (Specific Result) — Today we want to order a medium pizza.
Ну що, ви вже вирішили? (Completed Outcome) — So, have you decided yet?
ESSENTIAL GRAMMAR RULES
RULE A: PHASE VERBS REQUIRE IMPERFECTIVE INFINITIVES
When an action follows verbs indicating the beginning, continuation, or ending of an action (such as починати / почати, закінчувати / закінчити, повертатися), you must always use an imperfective infinitive:
Він закінчив слухати музику. — He finished listening to music.
Ми почали розуміти граматику. — We began to understand grammar.
Вона почала читати нову книгу. — She began to read a new book.
RULE B: DURATION INDICATOR VS. COMPLETION MARKER
Notice how key adverbs change the required aspect in the past tense:
Марко довго робив завдання. — Marko was doing the assignment for a long time (Duration -> Imperfective).
Марко нарешті зробив завдання. — Marko finally completed the assignment (Result -> Perfective).
HOW PERFECTIVE VERBS ARE FORMED
Perfective verbs are created from imperfective verbs through five main structural patterns:
Adding Prefixes (Префіксальний спосіб) Adding prefixes is the most common way to form perfective aspect pairs. Common prefixes include по-, за-, з- (с-), на-, про-, при-, and ви-:
дивитися -> подивитися (to watch)
думати -> подумати (to think)
пакувати -> запакувати (to pack)
казати -> сказати (to say)
писати -> написати (to write)
читати -> прочитати (to read)
їхати -> приїхати (to arrive)
Dropping or Changing Suffixes (Суфіксальний спосіб)
Dropping -ва-: продавати -> продати (to sell), вишивати -> вишити (to embroider).
Changing -увати to -ити or -ати: вирішувати -> вирішити (to decide), записувати -> записати (to note down).
Adding -ну- (for sudden, single actions): стрибати -> стрибнути (to jump), стукати -> стукнути (to knock).
Sound Alternations (Чергування звуків) When shifting aspects, root vowels and consonants frequently undergo regular alternations:
с -> ш: запрошувати / запросити (to invite)
з -> ж: заморожувати / заморозити (to freeze)
т -> ч: скорочувати / скоротити (to shorten)
д -> дж: народжувати / народити (to give birth)
в -> вл: уявляти / уявити (to imagine)
б -> бл: заробляти / заробити (to earn)
ст -> щ: пригощати / пригостити (to treat)
Stress Shift & Suppletive Roots
Stress Shift: приміря́ти (imperfective - to be trying on) vs. примі́ряти (perfective - to try on).
Suppletive Roots: Some aspect pairs use entirely different roots, such as брати (imperfective) vs. взяти (perfective).
