The Instrumental case (Орудний відмінок) in Ukrainian is used to express companionship, instrument of action, location, and specific temporal or abstract relationships. When paired with prepositions, it primarily indicates static location, accompaniment, or ongoing activity.

Primary Prepositions & Their Meanings

• з / зі / із (with, accompanied by, containing):

  • Я п'ю каву з молоком. — I drink coffee with milk.

  • Він іде в кіно з Оленою. — He is going to the cinema with Olena.

• перед (in front of, before):

  • Автомобіль стоїть перед будинком. — The car is parked in front of the house.

  • Я хвилююся перед іспитом. — I am nervous before the exam.

• під (under, underneath, to the rhythm/sound of):

  • Кіт спить під столом. — The cat is sleeping under the table.
