The Accusative case (Знахідний відмінок) answers the fundamental questions кого? (whom? for animate objects) and що? (what? for inanimate objects). When paired with prepositions, it indicates direction, destinations, fixed time schedules, topics of discussion, or purpose.
Direction & Movement Target (у/в, на, під):
у / в (into / to): Used for destinations inside countries, cities, or enclosed spaces (e.g., летіти у Францію, покласти в коробку).
на (onto / to): Used for open spaces, events, or surface placement (e.g., йти на концерт, на ринок, покласти на стіл).
під (under): Indicates movement underneath a target (e.g., іграшка впала під стіл).
Time Expressions & Days of the Week (у/в, на, через):
у / в (on [day]): Used with days of the week (e.g., у понеділок, у середу, у п'ятницю). Feminine days undergo an ending shift (середа → у середу, субота → у суботу).
на (for [duration]): Expresses planned timeframes or schedules (e.g., розклад на тиждень, на понеділок).
через (in [time] / across / because of): Specifies time remaining (через пів години, через тиждень), physical crossing (через дорогу), or cause (через погоду).
Topic, Purpose & Substitution (про, по, за):
про (about): Paired with verbs of communication or thought like читати, казати, розповідати, думати (e.g., читати про історію, питати про кого?). Colloquially, за is sometimes used in place of про (e.g., казав за нього).
по (for / fetching): Used when moving with the specific aim of obtaining something (e.g., піти по воду, по молоко).
за (for / in place of): Indicates substituting or acting on behalf of someone (e.g., працювати за тебе). (Note: "замість" also means "instead of", but takes the Genitive case).
Common Verbs Requiring Prepositions + Accusative:
Дивитися на (to look at)
Іти / їхати в (на) (to go/travel to)
Питати / розповідати / читати про (to ask / tell / read about)
Піти по (to go fetch)
