Understanding the Ukrainian Dative Case (Давальний відмінок)
The Dative case in Ukrainian primarily answers the questions Кому? (To whom?) and Чому? (To what?). It is essential for identifying indirect objects, expressing logical subjects in impersonal sentences, stating age, and using specific prepositions.
Core Functions of the Dative Case
Indirect Objects & Recipients: Indicates the person or object receiving an action or item (verbs like давати, писати, пояснювати, дарувати, допомагати, дякувати).
Приклад: Петро дає книжку Галині. (Petro gives a book to Halyna.)
Expressing Age: In Ukrainian, age is expressed by putting the person or object in the Dative case followed by the number of years (років).
Приклад: Іванові один рік. / Мені тридцять років. (Ivan is one year old. / I am 30 years old.)
Impersonal Constructions (Necessity, Advice, Permission): Words like треба / потрібно (need to), слід (should), можна (may/allowed), and не можна (forbidden) require the logical subject in the Dative case.
Приклад: Марії треба купити хліб. (Maria needs to buy bread.)
Приклад: Туристові слід про це подумати. (The tourist should think about this.)
Perception & Feelings (здається, подобається): Expressing impressions or likes.
Приклад: Мені здається, що це наша вулиця. (It seems to me that this is our street.)
Приклад: Петрові подобається читати. (Petro likes to read.)
Preposition «Завдяки» (Thanks to / Due to): Unlike most Ukrainian prepositions, завдяки exclusively governs the Dative case to express cause and effect.
Приклад: Завдяки сонячній погоді ми провели день надворі. (Thanks to sunny weather, we spent the day outdoors.)
