The Genitive case (Родовий відмінок) is the most preposition-heavy case in Ukrainian grammar. Whether you are expressing location, motion, possession, or negation, mastering these prepositions is essential for natural everyday conversation.
1. Essential Prepositions & Usage
без (without): Я п'ю каву без цукру. (I drink coffee without sugar.)
біля / коло / близько (near, close to, approximately): Біля нашого будинку є парк. (There is a park near our house.)
від (from a person): Я отримала лист від Павла. (I received a letter from Pavlo.)
для (for): Це подарунок для мами. (This is a present for mom.)
до (to, towards, until, by): Ми їдемо до Львова. (We are going to Lviv.)
після (after): Після вечері ми ходимо на прогулянку. (After dinner we go for a walk.)
проти (against, opposite): Я не маю нічого проти цього. (I have nothing against this.)
навпроти (opposite, in front of): Навпроти церкви є новий парк. (Opposite the church there is a new park.)
серед (among): Серед його друзів є українці. (Among his friends there are Ukrainians.)
навколо (around): Навколо міста є зелений ліс. (Around the city there is a green forest.)
з / із / зі (from a location): Ігор їде з Житомира. (Ihor is driving from Zhytomyr.)
ради / заради (for the sake of): Заради свободи ми готові боротися. (For the sake of freedom we are ready to fight.)
у / в (possession / "to have"): У тебе є кіт? (Do you have a cat?) / В Олега є син. (Oleh has a son.)
2. Expressing Origin & Destination: З/ІЗ vs. ДО
When describing movement, pair з / із (from) with до (to/towards). Both prepositions always govern the Genitive case.
Origin (from): Use з/із for geographical locations and від for people.
Він повертається з Лондона. (He is returning from London.)
Він іде від вчителя. (He is coming from the teacher.)
Destination (to): Use до for both places and people.
Ми їдемо з Києва до Одеси. (We are traveling from Kyiv to Odesa.)
Марта пише до нашого вчителя. (Marta writes to our teacher.)
3. Phonetic Nuances in the Genitive Singular
When placing masculine nouns into the Genitive case, watch for two fundamental sound changes:
Vowel Alternation (і → о): Closed syllables with і in the nominative form switch to о in open syllables in the Genitive case. This applies to standard nouns as well as city names:
стіл → немає стола (table)
Чернігів → з Чернігова (Chernihiv)
Косів → із Косова (Kosiv)
Fleeting Vowels (е dropping): In animate and inanimate masculine nouns ending in -ець or -ен, the vowel е drops out when adding Genitive case endings (-а / -я):
олівець → без олівця (pencil)
ранець → без ранця (backpack)
хлібець → без хлібця (bread roll)
човен → без човна (boat)
4. Negation & Double Negatives
In Ukrainian, when a verb is negated, direct objects shift from the Accusative case to the Genitive case. This structure is reinforced by double negation (нічого, ніяк-, etc.):
Positive (Accusative): Я маю нову книжку. (I have a new book.)
Negative (Genitive): Я не маю ніякої книжки. (I don't have any book.)
Positive (Accusative): Вони їдять м'ясо. (They eat meat.)
Negative (Genitive): Вони не їдять ніякого м'яса. (They don't eat any meat.)
